Changes to Apple Health
Important updates to Washington Apple Health (Medicaid)
A new federal law, H.R. 1, was signed on July 4, 2025. It is also called the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
The law changes several federal programs. For Seattle Roots patients, the main changes are to Apple Health, Washington’s Medicaid program.
About 57% of Seattle Roots patients have Apple Health coverage. The following changes will take effect over the next few years:
- Who can get Apple Health will change. This includes refugees, people seeking asylum, and other adults who are not U.S. citizens. This change starts October 1, 2026.
- Some adults with Apple Health will need to spend at least 80 hours each month working, training, or taking part in approved community activities. This requirement starts January 1, 2027.
- Adults with Apple Health will need to renew their coverage every 6 months instead of every 12 months. This change starts January 1, 2027.
- For some people, Apple Health may pay for only 1 month of care received before the application date, instead of 3 months. This change starts January 1, 2027.
You do not have to figure this out alone. The Seattle Roots Navigator team can answer questions, explain how these changes may affect you or your family, and help you with next steps.
