Patient Care Philosophy

Al's goal as a doctor is to partner with patients in finding and achieving each individual's personal healing and well-being goals. They believe in the healing power of story and seek opportunities to hold space for each person's story within healthcare. They have special interests in migrant health, LGBTQ+ health, procedures, geriatrics, palliative care, abolition medicine, lifestyle medicine, narrative medicine and food justice. Al is humbled to be the 15th generation of Japanese-American doctors in their family and strives to bring that healing tradition into their work as a family medicine physician.

Why I Work Here

Al was drawn to Carolyn Downs because of its Black Panther roots and continued commitment to deep and radical healthcare that is accessible and healing. They are honored to join the community of healers, mentors, activists and change-makers working towards anti-oppression, anti-racism and community-grounded healthcare that honors our humanity. "

Well Being Philosophy

For Al, well-being is less of a goal and more of a (wobbly) process of healing that seeks to align what matters most to how we live our lives. Al generally takes a harm-reduction approach to life which often means cooking together with loved ones, way too much chocolate and a good swim (ok, more of a float) in Lake Washington after clinic.
